Voices in Solidarity with the People of Gaza is an anthology of 39 Muslim writers. It was born out of a deep desire to express our alignment with the struggle of Palestinians and by extension with all oppressed people of the world. This anthology contains the voices of those who wish to declare, loudly and clearly, the side of history we stand on. The patient suffering of the people of Gaza has united us in their cause. The world is reckoning with the reality that oppression is undeniable, and Muslims everywhere are ready to resist injustice anywhere. May this book bring solace to those in pain and encourage us not to rest until justice prevails. Half of profits will be donated, inshallah.

For Hope and Glory

“Good morning class and Happy New Year!” chirped Ms. Zelda. “Now that we’ve begun 2424, I want everyone to share their new year’s resolutions. Yocheved? Would you like to begin?”

Yocheved stood up. “This year I want to learn everything about Adama’s history and when I’m older I'll share our story with the world!”

Ms. Zelda smiled, “You're in luck Yocheved because today’s lesson is about how our wonderful country came to be.”

Once everyone was done sharing their resolutions, Ms. Zelda began the day’s lesson.

“As you all know, Adama is a country of peace and beauty, however, that wasn’t always the case. There was a time when this land that we call home was occupied by Savages!”

The class gasped.

“Yes, around 400 years ago Adama was a land of chaos and disease. But our people refused to accept such havoc and fought for our land. Over the next centuries we cleansed Adama from the Savages, and upon their ashes, we built the thriving society we are today!”

Wow! Yocheved thought. I’m glad that we saved this land from what it was. Or else I wouldn’t even be here!

“And don’t forget to sign your permission slips for tomorrow’s field trip to Adama’s supreme court!” Ms. Zelda reminded them.

As the day went on, Yocheved couldn’t stop thinking about Adama’s story. Her very existence was thanks to a war that took place 400 years ago. She should’ve been happy, but, Aren’t there always two sides to a story, she thought.

The Date

October 7th became a euphemism.

A way to say something without saying anything. The

date is a safe house, a code word. I don’t call it

a war because it is not a war. I do not call it an attack

because it is not an attack – or at least – it is

not just an attack. To name the date is a detachment, a

disembowelment of what we all witnessed, a

mirror reflection: the split in our psyches.

The Date is all I can cough out of my choked throat, all

that escapes from the thread between my

skin and the sword on my jugular.

The Date captures time, freezes it, anchors it.

The before and the after.

The moment when the mask slipped another inch, and the

ugly blistered face behind it revealed

itself to us in the daytime. (Until that Date, it had

appeared only in our nightmares.)

Vaulted Prayers

Vaulted prayers launched high from small rose-colored mouths. A flood of prayers pours through open roofs, broken walls, and thin plastic tents.

We have clarity and fluidity, and tears on full tap to God. This trial has made fledging Muslims into robust mu’mins.

Soft threads tied by delicate hands and we sit and weave on the loom. We weave stories and fragments. We hope only in Allah. That His justice will reign if not here, in the Hereafter. He loves it when His believers turn to Him.

We see allies go out like the tide. But our Lord Alone keeps us afloat.

Billions of souls attached to the dunya contain solidified hearts like chunks of rock. And so I revolt against this crusty and calcified inaction. Revolt with prayers, with action. Increase iman and be a people of answered duaas.

Human, Right?

The Solution for Gaza

Support for the Palestinians

This is the great question: why do we support Gaza? Remember that Palestine is a country, which is so dear in Islam and it is a holy land of the Muslim world. Palestine is home to one of the sacred masjids in Islam, Masjid al-Aqsa. Masjid Al-Aqsa is the third holiest site in Islam. Palestine was the first qibla for Muslims. Allah (SWT) has mentioned it in the Holy Qur’an, calling it the Holy Land and the Blessed Land in Surah al-Ma’idah, 5:21. Palestine is the home of many great Prophets and individuals, including Prophets Ibrahim, Ishaq, Dawud, Yaqub, Sulayman, Zakariya, Yahya and Isa, peace be upon them.

People are divided into two types: one is the oppressed and the other is the inhumane people of the world, the oppressors. Many people all over the world love Gaza and the people of Palestine. What is going to happen to the people of Gaza who have been living and dying under oppression among and next to the most inhumane and oppressive state in the world since long before 1948? Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Qur’an:

“And why would you not fight in the cause of Allah

and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say,

‘Our Lord, take us out of this land whose people are oppressors

and appoint for us from Yourself a protector

and appoint for us from Yourself a helper.’?”

(The Holy Qur’an, 4:75)

The Burning Bush

Time is a currency. I had never experienced the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as to living here as a traveler (Bukhari: 6416) and this world being a prison for a believer (Muslim: 2956), but I’ve begun to feel that now. Alas, I had to see so much to feel that, but that is the reality. I learned from my Palestinian brothers and sisters, that they are the people of “Alhamdullilah” (Praise be to Allah), they are the people of living faith, they are the people of “in sha Allah” (if Allah wills). While we just use these phrases everyday as a habit, somewhere along the time, we have lost its essence. Now that I look around me, I realize how much I have amassed and, unintentionally, passed this love of the world to my children. I have failed to lead by example and fell for “Al haakum-muthakaathir, hatta zurtumul maqaabir” (Competition for more [gains] diverts you [from Allah], until you end up in [your] graves) (Qur’an, 102:1-2).

No Two Sides

to a genocide.

If you call it a “conflict”

you’re being complicit.

And when it comes to the lies,

my eyes struggle with the loss of life,

and the cost of being occupied.

“Free Palestine.”

The two words on everybody’s mind.

We ask for an end to the apartheid.

We saw the bodies of babies,

entire families, decimated,

mosques, churches, hospitals, and camps, desecrated

because the systems put in place are systematically aiding hatred.

Bloodied bread and bags of arms,

Ice cream trucks carrying body parts,

every day will be a Hudaybiyyah

until we see a Fatḥi Ghaza.

Indigenous Solidarity: A Course

Towards a Just System for All

The similarities between the last century of Palestinian history and the last half millennia for the First Nations of Canada (and others) are too many to enumerate, but one that really stood out to me is this idea of the constant need to “prove our humanity.” We are in the perpetual role of having to “perform our suffering” (El-Kurd, 2024) for all audiences in order to convince them of our struggles. Showing our pain while also not offending those responsible for it (Abdel-Fattah, 2023) is a symptom of our acceptance, as reluctant as it may be, of our status as non-agents within our own story, which is the story the colonizer has invented about us.

We (First Nations, like Palestinians) for too long have succumbed to the belief that if we are to be seen, we must comply with this didaskalia.۞ We need to be grateful for what we have and simultaneously decry what we have un-justly been deprived of. We have to rehash history because it’s always conveniently forgotten, as we only exist in the margins and footnotes of history books: we are but an asterisk, begrudgingly afforded us by benevolent scholars. We experience living in this constant double consciousness of being victimized and having to contend with a system set up to prop up the victimizer. We are not allowed to simply exist in our own dignity. We are not granted the luxury of a fair portrayal, because our bodies are “supposed to be harmed” by virtue of their mere existence!

Our presence is a form of intolerable resistance, and for that we must never forget to apologize. We are part of the scenery, a two-dimensional backdrop with no lines of our own, and no role to play but to make the colonizer look and feel good about him/herself. When/if given a voice, we are expected to condemn those who dare to rebel against the system, in no uncertain terms, before we are even allowed to give our testimony, which will perennially “slip” (to use Homi Bhabha’s term) (Bhabha, p.126), be interrupted, distorted, and ultimately dismissed, should it differ from the “official” story, no matter how baseless this latter one is. For our testimony to be heard it must be detailed, and perfectly recounted, with receipts of the minute accounts of our butchering (by photographs, written and stamped documents, dated and verified with signatures: we do not control the narrative, because we do not hold the tools that validate that narrative). We can only hope to achieve an audience, let alone a favorable verdict!

On the flip side, mere allegations against any of us are readily believed and acted upon with extreme urgency, and disproportionate retaliation (if we are to believe that retaliation is ever justified) because our guilt is assumed a priori. The story, so it seems, must continue to unfold as it “always” has: we are the bad guys, and our suffering is only our fault, our complaints are useless because we only have ourselves to blame. No longer.

This has now come to an end or so we hope. With the wide use and spread of instantaneous digital information, the evidence has become overwhelming. The arrogance of the perpetrators has revealed itself in all its ugliness, and those who believed their lies are now questioning their beliefs. Popular opinion has shifted, and this, we all hope, is a first giant step towards unraveling the falsehood that granted cover for abuses to be continued unabated. The audience has finally heard.

۞ In theatre studies, didaskalia is anything written within a play text that is not directly spoken by a character.

Gaza woke the world up, and now their suffering is galvanizing people from every corner of the earth to add their voice to the clamoring, to hold our political leaders account-able, to demand journalists do the job they’re supposed to do as well as defend and protect those who are trying to at great risk to themselves and their families. Stop the insanity. Those of us who have lived with the trauma of relocation, war or oppression felt it the minute the genocidal war was declared: Palestinians everywhere have been feeling this and warning against it for over a century. And now we all know: nobody who owns a smartphone or has access to the internet can say that they didn’t know. Try as some might to hide their heads in the sand, it has become impossible to justify the cruelty being inflicted on the Palestinians.

Ethnic cleansing is the most disgusting, filthiest euphemism a heartless person could come up with to describe the deprivation of the existence, history, experiences, and points of view of an entire population. Some countries pride them-selves on the richness of their diversity, and then turn around and fund the erasure of an entire population and culture. They talk about peace and justice, yet send weapons to aid in a genocide. But now everyone sees what they’re doing and we won’t stand on the sidelines and let it happen without making a fuss.

The people of Gaza showed us, like nobody else was able to in recent memory, that Allah Alone holds our souls, and that to Him is our return. We always knew this, but never so fiercely, never so clearly. It’s time we walk the walk and talk the talk. Our time is counted, so let’s make it count.

Don’t think that the zionist state of Israel is made up of the only madmen and madwomen who traipse all over like they’re behemoths. Obliteration of the lovers of Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala has been the psychotic rampage of many before them...

The people of Gaza’s faith and patience in the midst of the zionists’ disgraceful barbarism has awakened the conscience of the world’s people. Massive pro-Palestinian protests have taken place in Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Lebanon, Yemen, the UK, Canada, the US, and many other countries. Muslims and the upholders of peace and justice, individually and collectively, all around the world began protesting and demonstrating immediately against the zionist state’s war crimes and in support of the people of Gaza and Palestine, demanding a permanent end to the genocide in Gaza. They cut economic trade by boycotting the zionist state and its monopoly on products.

Tellingly, several countries, such as France, Germany, the UK, Austria, Hungary, Bahrain, Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, India – especially in Kashmir and Jammu – Singapore, the zionist state and even Florida in the US, criminalized public support for Palestine, restricting pro-Palestinian speech. Germany even banned the Palestinian flag, the keffiyeh and fundraising for Palestine, like the zionist state does. (See Note 1 for References).

For the older folks, this has been ongoing forever. But the younger adults all over the globe, those under 35 for ex-ample, have only ever known the oppressive parasite that is the zionist state. Time is certainly running out and the youth have made it clear that they understand the connections, the corporations, the military-industrial complex, the lunatics, the war-mongers, and they are solidly in solidarity with the people of Gaza and Palestine. Protests, demonstrations, rallies, vigils, boycotts, blockades, sit-ins, die-ins, walk-outs, car caravans, live video documentation, civil disobedience, strikes, resolutions, petitions, open letters, statements and other actions of solidarity took place in cities and towns all over the world. (See Appendix 1 for a Table of Places of Solidarity with Palestine, Especially Gaza 2023-2024)...

This time is critical, crucial and catastrophic. The least we can do is share the voices and concerns of Palestinians and other oppressed peoples. The most we can do is join the cause and the mustazafeen and say out loud, “We are all Palestinians!” Otherwise, what’s the point of living? Didn’t the Prophets, all of them, stand up for the oppressed? Wasn’t their whole focus on loving Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala and speaking truth and justice and peace and love? Isn't there a Judgement Day and a Hereafter?...

We pray we have presented the contributors’ words and artwork to the world on behalf of humanity, in Allah’s Subhanahu wa ta'ala Way, as a tiny voice of various peoples who want a way to participate and help but are unable due to the system that oppresses and keeps people apart and frantic and scattered and disunited and in disarray. We are NOT experts of other people’s lives, of the oppression they live under and perish in, but we are human and that and our belief in our Creator are what calls us forward because humanity is suffering and being butchered and humiliated and exterminated. Oppression is oppression. We don’t need the details to know if someone is being oppressed. We know because we know. We can feel, see and hear. Our hearts tell our minds. What happened to Indigenous Peoples, happened to Black Peoples, happened to Muslim Peoples, etc., etc., etc.

If we do not speak up and present the small tributes and sorrows and hopes, then we will likely find ourselves in ruin here and in the Hereafter. Otherwise, what will we tell our children and grandchildren when they learn about it and ask us what we did then in 2023/2024...? And what will we tell Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala?

I am almost done with the book, I wish I could say I enjoyed it just like I usually do, but I can’t, I didn’t enjoy it, I cried, at times I sobbed like a baby, my heart sank while reading some of those accounts. I felt infuriated looking at the dates of the pieces incorporated in the book, some of them were so old yet relative, and our brothers and sisters have been going through it for so long. The book did what it was supposed to do. All of us are on the same page and share the same kind of emotions. Laila Hasib is the author of several young adult novels. She launched her own unique publishing company, Inked Resistance Islamic Publishing. She has generously offered young adults and new adults the opportunity to have their voices heard through her company. Through it she hopes to encourage Muslim young and new adults, strengthen their faith, hope and identity and provide worthwhile, enlightening and enjoyable fiction. An American Muslim convert, retired teacher, writer, mother of five and grandmother, Laila Hasib is married and lives in Ontario, Canada.

Hanaa Walzer is a Swiss-Mi'kmaq convert who writes, edits, translates, and has taught for decades, while bringing up her four sons on four different continents. Hanaa has a background in literature and has written academic, fictional and non-fictional pieces for online and print journals, magazines, and anthologies.
