The illustrations and storyline are equally beautiful. The message in the book is one of the beauty of the hijab in a way that children can resonate to. In a western society where women wearing the hijab are often mocked or looked down upon, stories like this one help empower our community, especially our girls and young women.
The effort put into the illustrations of the book are lovely however the depiction of the hijab is far from how it should be taught to our daughters. Although this may not have been the intention of the writer, as a reader the story degraded the hijab and completely missed the point. Right from the first page referring to it as “funny” to the ideas of magic, dancing and the admiration to be a movie star were all ideas the hijab aims to protects us from.
definitely would not pass it on to another reader nor will my daughter or friends be getting a copy
